Rolling blackouts coastal fever

Rolling blackouts coastal fever

Report on the state of marine and coastal environments in Colombia.

Most cases occur from eating raw or undercooked fish or shellfish. However, even well-cooked food can be re-contaminated if rinsed with seawater. If seafood is not kept cold after harvesting, the bacteria may multiply more easily. Illness can develop if food is not handled properly during preparation or if prepared seafood is not kept properly refrigerated. See Food Safety Tips for more information on safe food handling practices.

Anyone who eats raw or partially cooked fish or shellfish can become ill. People who take antacids are more likely to get sick. Stomach acids help destroy bacteria, so when stomach acids are reduced, vibrio bacteria are more likely to pass through the stomach and into the intestine, where illness results.

Invemar

You may have heard that you can get a Vibrio infection from eating oysters and other fish and shellfish that are raw or undercooked. But did you know that you can also get this type of infection through an open wound? This can happen when a wound comes into contact with raw or undercooked fish and shellfish, their juices or splashes, or the salt water or brackish water they contain.

One species, the bacterium Vibrio vulnificus, can cause wound infections that could be fatal. Many people with a Vibrio vulnificus infection require intensive care or limb amputation, and about 1 in 5 people with this type of infection die, sometimes within a day or two of becoming ill.

Some Vibrio vulnificus infections cause necrotizing fasciitis, a serious infection in which the flesh around the open wound dies. Some media reports call this type of infection “flesh-eating bacteria,” although necrotizing fasciitis can be caused by more than one type of bacteria.
